Breaking Canvas

Breaking Canvas

Last Saturday we began a new project, Read Between the Lines, or Breaking Canvas. We looked at a Jackson Pollock documentary, which featured a famous artist dealing with the same issues that all artists face, the fear of the canvas and is precious form(Shown Above). After being commissioned to create a mural for Peggy Guggenheim, Pollock stared at his canvas for weeks, afraid of its size and purity. He redefined the way we look at the canvas. In our class, we decided we would face this fear, and channel it into our creative process. Using a word that generated meaning, students transformed their canvases from a 2D to 3D form.
